enmesh: Winsome Jobling

Plant fibres are the raw materials for paper makers; the carbon, hydrogen and oxygen that make up cellulose are also the most common elements in the human body; therefore as a papermaker empathy for the environment is in my blood! The reciprocal relationships of all living and non-living things is an elaborate and all-encompassing mesh of networks. Hand paper making allows me to transform fibres into new materials, to make paper that can bring an ecosystem of very real issues into tangible form. Printed paper pulps, bushfire charcoal and ochres are added on the wet sheet which are haunted by watermarks. The paper becomes both the substrate and content. The works become an interplay between the method and the message about the nature of the human impact on the world around us. My paper is not a neutral support. ...

The Gold series and the Poetry of Flowers- Susan Doherty

Art never sleeps, and in this body of work I explore nature’s beauty, awe and its mystery. What is often taken for granted is that beauty is everywhere. Within this exhibition I rejoice with flowers, as it’s hard to imagine life without their beauty. I am particularly interested in expressing art between realism and abstraction, reflecting my world and posing an emotional or poetic mien with a mix of colours and materials unrelated to reality. My garden makes the familiar strange, and the strange intimate. A garden of upright curves and leaning or falling forms making sense of organic chaos, using symbology of the natural world. Mixing materials and exuberance and using unconventional techniques, with a narrative and rich collection of intertwined whimsical collaged flowers, held together with found objects, paints, fabrics, wools, twine, papers, wire, frames - where anything is possible. The Gold Series and the Poetry of Flowers invite the viewer into an alternative universe of garden and imaginative spaces. ...

Alternate Conversation – Untethered Fibre Artists

Alternate Conversation A dialogue in fibre exploring the interchange between story and image. The works in this exhibition explore the significance and rich diversity in forms of communication and conversation. Each of the 22 artworks is embedded with its maker’s mark, celebrating the similarities and differences in the artist’s hand. A wide variety of fibre materials and techniques have been utilised by the 18 artists in interpreting this central theme. The exhibition includes imagery that ranges from social commentary, playful views of our world, to celebrations of lives and the people we know and care about. As an established group, untethered strives to keep the momentum of collective artmaking by working within gallery contexts and exploring different personal and social ideas. The ‘Alternate’ series of exhibitions differ from the traditional untethered exhibitions in that they are based on a unifying framework – a commonality of form, size, or premise. Untethered fibre artists were formed in 2014 as a collective whose goal was twofold. Firstly, to extend the visibility of fibre art for galleries audiences. Secondly, to provide a supportive platform for the artists to grow their individual art practices and exhibit their work. The artists in this exhibition are Rebecca Ann Brady, Jennifer Corkish, Lorna Crane, Pam de Groot, Jennifer Florey, Desdemona Foster, Cathie Griffith, Ellen Howell, Catherine Lees, Denise Lithgow, Brenda Livermore, Helen MacRitchie, Amanda McAlister, Robyn McGrath, Rhonda Nelson, Kirry Toose, Judith Wilson and Elaine Witton. ...

Rust and Stardust: Alysn Midgelow-Marsden

Rust and Stardust Exhibition ’… and the rest is rust and stardust …’. from Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov (Scientist and writer). The ‘Rust and Stardust’ exhibition consists of a series of wall and free-standing sculptures created by Alysn Midgelow-Marsden. We are transient; only briefly in existence; yet all encompassing in our consciousness. We are such a speck in the ‘rust and stardust’ of the universe, yet our experience insists that we are more than this. That we are part of an accidental evolution inextricably linked to a universe without meaning should drive us to make the most of our consciousness; this special, probably literally universally unique property of life on this planet and life as a human. ‘Existence’ consists of pressure points, balances and tensions which affect our understanding of an object, an image, a word, an interaction. It is this mutability and the now-ness and passing of ephemeral moments combined with the effects of interactions which are celebrated in this exhibition. The works cumulatively create a sense of support, connection and healing through a sense of internal strength and positive purpose. When asked about the inspiration for her work, Alysn describes picking up the thread of memories and walking backwards along twisting paths reminding her of many connections which, like the ripples coming back from the far shore when a stone is thrown in the water will cross with others in an ever-changing pattern. Each experience and moment will link to another, though rarely, she notes wryly, in an ordered or logical sequence. Rust and Stardust opens Thursday 20th July and is on show until 27 August 2023 at Timeless Textiles gallery ...
