Inspiring Women in Stitch: Wednesday Makers Group
The Wednesday Makers Group is a group of community minded stitchers who meet once a week at Timeless Textiles to connect and create. The group works collaboratively and creatively to raise awareness of community issues and to celebrate International Women’s Year.
Past projects have been about fundraising for a cause or donating-in-kind. The brilliant success of these projects has demonstrated how a creative community has developed, and how inspirational the group is, as a whole and as individuals.
After a successful, smaller exhibition at the Hunter Wetlands in 2024, it seemed the right time (2025-2026 ) to challenge the group further to create artworks for a themed fibre art exhibition at Timeless Textiles, with Anne Kempton as mentor and curator.
The theme of “inspiring women in stitch ” seems an obvious choice for an International Women’s Day 2026 exhibition. Who inspires inspiring women? The Wednesday Group spent time researching, remembering and recollecting information about women who individually have inspired them. The artworks capture the essence and values of the chosen person(s). The work also conveys and celebrates stories and messages about the spirit and courage of diverse inspirational women, often unrecognised in history. Creating artworks about others who influence us positively also reveals our own thoughts, values and social justice issues which support our own quality of life.
