Alternate Conversation – Untethered Fibre Artists
Alternate Conversation – Untethered Fibre Artists
A dialogue in fibre exploring the interchange between story and image.
The works in this exhibition explore the significance and rich diversity in forms of communication and conversation. Each of the 22 artworks is embedded with its maker’s mark, celebrating the similarities and differences in the artist’s hand. A wide variety of fibre materials and techniques have been utilised by the 18 artists in interpreting this central theme.
The exhibition includes imagery that ranges from social commentary, playful views of our world, to celebrations of lives and the people we know and care about. As an established group, untethered strives to keep the momentum of collective artmaking by working within gallery contexts and exploring different personal and social ideas.
The ‘Alternate’ series of exhibitions differ from the traditional untethered exhibitions in that they are based on a unifying framework – a commonality of form, size, or premise.
Untethered fibre artists were formed in 2014 as a collective whose goal was twofold. Firstly, to extend the visibility of fibre art for galleries audiences. Secondly, to provide a supportive platform for the artists to grow their individual art practices and exhibit their work.
The artists in this exhibition are Rebecca Ann Brady, Jennifer Corkish, Lorna Crane, Pam de Groot, Jennifer Florey, Desdemona Foster, Cathie Griffith, Ellen Howell, Catherine Lees, Denise Lithgow, Brenda Livermore, Helen MacRitchie, Amanda McAlister, Robyn McGrath, Rhonda Nelson, Kirry Toose, Judith Wilson and Elaine Witton.
