Badge of Honour – with accompanying artist statement
Bicycle inner tube, fabric, crochet yarn, beads, sequins, embroideryfloss, paint pens, brooch clasp, cereal bag plastic, sewing threadHand and free motion machine embroidery, beading, crochet – As a textile artist my work frequently utilises stitch and text. I like to incorporate found materials in my making process, presenting these in new and unexpected ways, which provides an element of cohesiveness in my work. In this instance the small wearable brooch mirrors techniques I have employed in the wearable garments I make in my broader practice, the machine stitched plastic is a technique I have used in both wall hung works and wearable art garments, and the subject matter has been previously visited in the gold framed, paper woven reference work “Stop telling women to smile”. In many ways my art practice has changed but has also stayed the same; continually evolving with a consistent recognisable voice. I often revisit themes, materials, and techniques. An initial idea is posed, examined and through making, changes as it is refined and resolved. I am interested in language and how it shapes societal values and discussions pertaining to women. I make work that responds to the language used to frame and narrate stories reported in the news. I create artwork as a means of making sense of the world; of processing rage and grief and injustices I am witness to. My work advocates for and amplifies the voices of those who are not seen or heard. Through my work I seek to frame discussions that are accessible and aesthetically pleasing, while inviting the audience to inspect, engage with and question what they see and hear, providing a catalyst for change in the world. I see my work as a dialogue – a meeting point for connection, discussion and for some, radical change. 200 x 40
