Found Cloth Series: Scottish Shorts (UK)
For many years I have been salvaging and gathering abandoned, discarded, and lost pieces of cloth. I came across a pair of extremely distressed shorts on a beach in Garlieston, on the west coast of Scotland. After unpicking the seams and stitches that held the tattered shorts together, the small fragments were restitched to create one new cloth. In keeping with the Japanese ethos of Mottainai, meaning too good to waste, even the tiniest fragment was saved and included. The fragile pieces have been reassembled onto lightweight cotton, stabilizing methods of repair that might be made while conserving ancient cloth fragments from an archaeological dig. Glimpses of maps, words and numbers refer to the location where the shorts were found. – Fabric and threadHand Stitch 28 x 182 cm
