Acts of Fortification, 1: The Before and the After (USA)
Doilies are soft, labouring, discardable bodies – historically crafted to bear the brunt of hard edges, to diffuse sunlight, capture oils, moisture, and dust – intended to protect more valuable, harder surfaces. My process of darning into the decorative holes left by original makers draws together margins of an unwanted, and currently unused object to reconsider use value – creating weight, warmth, and visibility where this didn’t exist prior. Darning enters these spaces (not overtly in need of repair) to better understand emptiness and brokenness. The act is one of remaking, reassessing use, and over-writing known and/or unknown histories to fortify these abandoned, vulnerable objects. – Vintage doilies, woolDarning 81 cm W x 35.5 cm H
