Julie Ryder: Nigredo

Silk, cotton ( Inner layer). Fruit fermentation, stitch – ”Nigredo” refers to a process in Alchemy that means decomposition, and is one of the first steps in transforming base matter into gold. My nigredo fabrics are produced by fermenting fruit directly onto silk for nearly six months to obtain ghostly images of their remains, together with evidence of bacterial and fungal colonisation. I began this process in 1995, and my first exhibition with Timeless Textiles in 2012 was a solo show of stitched and pieced nigredo fabrics called “Alchemic Transformation”. This piece pays homage to this era of my work, and my history of exhibiting with Timeless Textiles. 20cm x 18cm
