Snail Mail Art with Wilma Simmons
Course Overview
“Snail Mail Art” is a two day creative workshop designed to introduce and develop techniques in art collage.
“Snail Mail In this fibre art workshop recycled paper, envelopes, postcards and postage stamps will be used Fabrics and other recycled items and found objects will also be introduced to create imaginative and unique small art works.
Day 1 will be devoted to learning, practising and imaginatively extending techniques.
These will include:
Choosing a theme and materials
Collage Basics –
Conveying a message. or feeling through collage.
Adding stitch to collage – hand stitching /machine stitching
Adding text to collage
Adding photos to collage
Day 2 will be a day of creating, inspiring and reimagining your own ‘snail mail’ art project
which may take the form of a series of mixed media art postcards and envelopes or an artist book and envelope cover.

Materials List
- Used stationery – paper, envelopes, postcards, postage stamps
- Used teabags, tissue paper, magazine or book pages,
- Smallscraps of material ( choose a limited colour palette )
- Basic sewing kit ( needle, scissors)
- Scissors suitable for paper
- Background paper A4 size or larger – sketch book paper or watercolour paper would be ok.
- Optional – copies of photos ( laser print ) , black and white gel pens,
Provided : embroidery threads, additional paper and fabric scraps , and photo samples.
For use in workshop markers, gel pens, wax, gel medium, sewing machine, paper cutter, scalpel
Workshop Terms
While our fibre art workshops are usually held in the gallery's historically significant workshop space, the workshop venue may change according to the needs and wishes of the artist tutor. Likewise, the times of the workshops may vary depending on the type of workshop and its presentation.
Timeless Textiles Gallery will, at its own discretion, where a participant is unable to attend a fibre art workshop, an exchange or credit note will be made available or a refund of the deposit or payment in accordance with the following Workshop Refund Policy.
Major commitments must be met, and in fairness to all, the policy concerning the refund is:
Cancellations 3 months prior to workshop date - refund 80% fees paid
Cancellations 2 months prior to workshop date- refund 50% fees paid.
Cancellations 1 month prior to workshop date- no refund.
