CREATIVE YOU: an expressive self portrait in textiles with Judi Nikoleski

Course Overview

Learn how to paint a portrait on cloth and to combine it with multiple textile techniques to create an expressive, integrated textile artwork.

These techniques will include appliqué, couching, free machine embroidery, quilting and painting.

You can choose your own combination, and each technique will be explored thoroughly

Teacher Profile

Judi Nikoleski works in her home studio near Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia. Her work has received multiple awards for surface design, creative use of pigments and dyes, textile portraiture and landscape. She has completed many series of unique art textiles which incorporate felting, dye painting, silk screening and many other textile techniques combined in unique ways with hand dye painted pictorial elements.

Requirements list

Self-portrait photograph – coloured A4 size print on white PHOTOCOPY PAPER,

            may be front on, profile or semi profile.

Scrap fabric pieces that reflect your own personality.

See-through and partial see-through synthetic fabrics (may be scraps) that appeal to you.

Lace scraps (optional)

Sewing machine with normal + embroidery foot.

Choice of coloured threads for your sewing machine.

3 sheets photocopy paper + 3 plastic sleeves.

Strands of coloured yarns to accent your fabric choices.

Sharp scissors.

Cutting board, ruler and rotary cutter (optional).

2 good (firm not floppy) pointed paint brushes, one small and one medium.

Fine permanent black marker + 2B pencil.

 

 

Tutor to supply

 

Japara squares, wadding, backing fabric, sheer fronts

Permaset paints, textile medium and Lumiere, fabric glue

 

Workshop Terms

While our fibre art workshops are usually held in the gallery's historically significant workshop space, the workshop venue may change according to the needs and wishes of the artist tutor. Likewise, the times of the workshops may vary depending on the type of workshop and its presentation.

Timeless Textiles Gallery will, at its own discretion, where a participant is unable to attend a fibre art workshop, an exchange or credit note will be made available or a refund of the  deposit or payment in accordance with the following Workshop Refund Policy.

Major commitments must be met, and in fairness to all, the policy concerning the refund is:
Cancellations 3 months prior to workshop date - refund 80% fees paid
Cancellations 2 months prior to workshop date- refund 50% fees paid.
Cancellations 1 month prior to workshop date- no refund.
