Barbara Schey

Shibori: Now and Forever with Barbara Schey

Course Overview

In this workshop, you will learn about dyes and a range of techniques including Barbara’s technique of ‘Slosh’ with fibre reactives as well as Arashi with fibre reactives with soda ash and discharge on black cotton and printed fabrics.

On the second day, using an indigo vat, you will learn to overdye slosh with napthol dyes and various other methods of Shibori (ie resist).

Teacher Profile

Textiles are a very tactile experience for Barbara Schey, consequently the many ways one can manipulate the cloth in shibori techniques to achieve new and exciting outcomes are sheer joy.

She has studied the “high tech” methods learned during her extensive overseas travel and adapted them for her home studio.  Her jackets are of simple construction to focus on dyeing and manipulation of the fabric.  Her favourite shibori techniques are Arashi and Miura (which she ties whilst traveling). Examples of Barbara’s work are shown on www.shibori.org member’s profile.  Barbara is also very interested in thread buttons and has given many workshops in this discipline and presented a paper on the history of the buttons at the recent 9thInternational Shibori Symposium in Hanzhou, China.

For 16 years, Barbara led fellow artists on countless international textile tours to visit weavers and dyers across the globe.

“Textiles are a very tactile experience for me, consequently the many ways one can manipulate the cloth in shibori techniqes to achieve new and exciting outcomes are sheer joy.  Dorset Buttons are another of my passions.”

“The last two images above are the last work I did before attending WSN ISS09 in China. The theme of the exhibition was “Fragment” and I used two 3m lengths of brush dyed habutai and organza which had been overdyed using itajime and soda ash to melt off the sericin. I had accidentally “destroyed” this fabric using soda ash but stitched the two layers together to create the kimono as illustrated in the attached images.

I have been invited to create and exhibit 2 large pieces with a group named “Untethered”in November 2014 with the theme of “Out of Hand”. We had our first meeting today where artists were invited to submit ”Mood Boards”. Somewhat overcome at the moment with the detail some people have gone into. I like strong simple images, I must not be influenced by others but will do my own thing – will send more information as it develops.”
