Sashiko Chiisaimono Gifts with Deb Nelson
Course Overview
Use sashiko stitching to make unique and charming Japanese chiisaimono small items suitable for gifts. This workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced sashiko stitchers. It assumes no prior knowledge or experience. We will make two items that are traditional Japanese style wrapping for gifts: a small komebukuro, Japanese-style rice bag that was used for carrying gifts of rice or beans, and a furoshiki wrapping cloth. They are both lovely ways to wrap gifts and are environmentally friendly re-useable wrapping for gifts, and they can be a gift. The rice bag can be used for sewing notions or jewelry. The komebukuro rice bag features sashiko on the four sides in four different moyozashi designs. The one corner of the furoshiki will also be stitched with a sashiko motif. Thirdly, we will design and make a necklace that uses sashiko on some fabric “beads”. Then we will make a set of coasters by stitching Japanese motifs or patterns on them. Red thread on white fabric can be used for this, or the traditional classic white thread on indigo blue. The coasters can be adapted for use as Christmas tree decorations, or made into pin cushions. All the materials needed to complete the projects will be provided in a kit, which includes cotton/linen fabric, sashiko thread and a sashiko needle.

Materials List
The kit costs $30. Participants need to bring sewing scissors, a needle threader and thimble (optional), and a pen, pencil, and paper to write or sketch ideas on. The sashiko items that are made in the workshop will need to be finished into completed projects at home with a sewing machine. The instructions and materials are included in the kit.
Workshop Terms
While our fibre art workshops are usually held in the gallery's historically significant workshop space, the workshop venue may change according to the needs and wishes of the artist tutor. Likewise, the times of the workshops may vary depending on the type of workshop and its presentation.
Timeless Textiles Gallery will, at its own discretion, where a participant is unable to attend a fibre art workshop, an exchange or credit note will be made available or a refund of the deposit or payment in accordance with the following Workshop Refund Policy.
Major commitments must be met, and in fairness to all, the policy concerning the refund is:
Cancellations 3 months prior to workshop date - refund 80% fees paid
Cancellations 2 months prior to workshop date- refund 50% fees paid.
Cancellations 1 month prior to workshop date- no refund.
