Exploring Japanese Sashiko Stitching with Deb Nelson
Course Overview
Learn about this ancient Japanese stitching technique and how it can be used to make everyday items, fashion and wall art pieces, as well as the philosophy of sashiko and the stories behind the designs.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced sashiko stitchers. It assumes no prior knowledge or experience. Sashiko has a timeless appeal and many applications. Learn the basics of sashiko to make several pieces of sashiko cloth. These are for a trivet and two placemats (or table centers).
Students will start with straight line designs and move onto curved line designs and learn how to use a template to trace designs onto the fabric in the way that Japanese people do. They will also learn the names of some of the beautiful classic sashiko patterns and what they symbolize.
Then we will explore ideas for using sashiko in non-traditional ways, to make unique pieces, that incorporate the use of applique with sashiko. After doing the first three sashiko activities, students may design their own sashiko piece, or alternatively, select from some designs that will be provided. The sashiko pieces that are made in the workshop will need to be finished off with a backing after the workshop with a sewing machine
(unless you wish to do that by hand).

Materials List
All the materials needed to complete the projects will be provided in a kit. The kit includes cotton/linen fabric, sashiko thread and a sashiko needle.
The kit costs $30. Participants need to bring sewing scissors, a thimble (optional), and a pen and pencil, and paper to write or sketch ideas on. Come along and enjoy a relaxing day of hand stitching.
Workshop Terms
While our fibre art workshops are usually held in the gallery's historically significant workshop space, the workshop venue may change according to the needs and wishes of the artist tutor. Likewise, the times of the workshops may vary depending on the type of workshop and its presentation.
Timeless Textiles Gallery will, at its own discretion, where a participant is unable to attend a fibre art workshop, an exchange or credit note will be made available or a refund of the deposit or payment in accordance with the following Workshop Refund Policy.
Major commitments must be met, and in fairness to all, the policy concerning the refund is:
Cancellations 3 months prior to workshop date - refund 80% fees paid
Cancellations 2 months prior to workshop date- refund 50% fees paid.
Cancellations 1 month prior to workshop date- no refund.
