BeCalm is a project of the Timeless Textiles’ Wednesday Makers group – a community- minded group of committed stitchers and fibre artists.
Over 12mths in 2017-2018 the group has designed and stitched weighted blankets and large toys for the children who attend ‘First Chance’ pre-school. The First Chance Early Childhood Intervention program supports children, aged 0-9 years old living with a disability (including developmental delay or those at risk of developmental delay), and also offers support to their families.
The Wednesday Makers Group have created colourful weighted toys and blankets because of the beneficial effects of these for children with autism and sensory issues. Parents and teachers have observed the calming effects of weighted blankets and toys. Research programs have shown the benefit of the science behind these weighted items – Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). This is the term for the feeling of gentle, distributed weight on the body. While such items are available commercially, the Wednesday group have designed forty weighted items with First Chance pre-schoolers in mind.
On Wednesday 28 March 2018 10.30am at Timeless Textiles, Rhonda Porter, co-ordinator of BeCalm and the Wednesday Makers Group officially donated the weighted blankets and toys to the director of First Chance, Darleen Taylor.
BeCalm has been supported by Making Your Place Program, Newcastle City Council.
