Tanya Matas is a Textile artist using stitched line drawing to capture the essence of a time and place.

Tanya has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Newcastle, Majoring in 3D Textiles/Ceramics.

Tanya’s working process begins with an image. The image could be of a person, people interacting, or a place in time. There must be an essence of connection with the image. For place must have meaning, significance to a time or event or a personal memory. The portrait must have depth with a strong sense of the individual’s personality and character. The Image is stitched using a basic sewing machine straight stitch onto calico.

The piece becomes a visual narrative for the viewer to mentally untangle.
