Strong Wings
Women’s handkerchiefs, lace, wire, fishnet, and chenille sticks Stitching and fraying – In the late 1960’s, the first feminist literature I read was written by an American, Kate Chopin whose work was originally banned in 1899 because it was a “blatant depiction of a woman’s desire for independence and sexual freedom.” One quotation from that work has stayed with me “you need strong wings to rise above prejudice.” Since then, I have met, worked with and admired many women with strong wings. To celebrate and honour women who have not only risen above prejudice and injustice but have made their own wings , I have created a pair of strong wings from the most delicate fine handkerchiefs previously owned by family and friends. “There is nothing stronger in the world than gentleness” Han Suyin 75 x 48 cm
