Taking your practice for a walk with Sylvia Watt
Course Overview
This one day workshop will be held with fibre artist Sylvia Watt. The emphasis of this workshop will be on the process of making art, and not end driven. Sitting with the uncertainty of mark making, the expectation of making successful works and looking at techniques to over come artists block will all be explored.
A variety of new materials in creative play will be introduced such as wax pencils, collage, watercolour. The emphasis will be on letting go and techniques, which will go on to inform future projects. You will explore the basic principles of colour and design. Sylvia provides much encouragement and mentoring in assisting you in pushing your own boundaries of making art.
Participants do not require any formal arts background – just a desire to explore and to have faith in the process.
Teacher profile
Sylvia is a Brisbane-based fibre artist and has been a felt-maker for over 20 years, exploring surface textures, mixing up materials, while retaining the clarity and integrity of each material used. Exploring organic forms, using mostly fibres combined with paint and ink, has been at the heart of her work.
At the heart of my work is an exploration of organic form. My main medium is fibres: Ive been a felt-maker for twenty years, and I love the surprise of it, the surface texture, the response of materials, clarity and integrity of materials that remain what they are, that maintain their individual identity, unlike paint. The approach of my work isn’t end-driven. It’s more about the process than the product, and more about the medium than the image.
