Coo-ee

Call & Response to Land & Art

A curated group show at Timeless Textiles

Background

In January 2022, artist, gallerist and director of Timeless Textiles Gallery, Anne Kempton, ventured out upon a 6 day, 100 kilometre walk along the Alpine Way in Victoria, Australia.

For Anne, the trek was, at times, arduous, however, it also provided her with immersion in, and views of, the astounding beauty of diverse landscapes from high alpine forests to grasslands along the track that winds from Falls Creek via Hotham, Dinner Plain to Harrietville.

After her walk, Anne creatively responded to her experience by making art about her journey and let her artworks call out to others by posting them on the 100 day project on Instagram (#the100dayproject).

Coo-ee: The Exhibition

Calling Out for Artists to Respond

Now Anne is inviting approx. 60 artists who work in fibre art to make their own creative response to the Coo-ee, or call out of her art inspired by the Alpine Way walk in Victoria Australia. The responses will be presented alongside Anne’s artworks as part of a curated group show.

The word, Coo-ee, is derived from indigenous language and is chosen as the title of the exhibition:

Coo-ee comes from the Dharug word “guu-wii”, literally “come here”, but the Europeans noted early in the piece that the Dharug used it as a shrill call to communicate over long distances.

Coo-ee is said to be amongst the first Aboriginal words taken into English by white Europeans.

Anne will select up to 17 images of her art works which are displayed here at random. Participating artists are to select an artwork as a source of inspiration. Each artist will select one of Anne’s artworks which is “the call” or “Coo-ee” and their own art is “the response”.

The Call

The Response

Please fill out this expression of interest form, stating your top three choices to respond to. Every effort will be made to give artists their first preference.

Artists will be notified of their response selection via email and confirmation of their inclusion to this curated group show between July 20 – July 25th. Response artwork creation can then commence, with final pieces to arrive at Timeless Textiles Gallery before or on 18th October 2022.
